Barbra Streisand was born on April 24, 1942 in Brooklyn, New York. With music running in her family, it was of no surprise that Streisand would also be a gifted singer. Her mother, Diana Ida Rosen, was a soprano singer when she was young before later becoming a school secretary. Her maternal grandparents emigrated from the Russian Empire, where her grandfather had been a cantor.
Streisand knew she wanted to be a star at a young age. She made her Broadway debut in I Can Get It For You Wholesale, where she earned her first Tony nomination. Soon after, Streisand released her first album. The record was an instant hit and earned two Grammy awards, including Album of the Year. Since then, Streisand has become one of the highest-selling female recording artists of all time and has dominated multiple entertainment fields. She is one of the very few who have earned the coveted EGOT, an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony.
