Happy birthday to Beyoncé! Today the music superstar turns 43.

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles on September 4, 1981 in Houston, Texas to Matthew and Celestine “Tina” Knowles. Her first name is a tribute to her mother’s maiden name, Beyoncé. Her maternal grandparents were French-speaking Louisiana Creoles and it is through her mother’s branch of the family that she descends from Joseph Broussard, who led the first group of Acadians to what is today Louisiana. Broussard is Beyoncé’s 6th great grandfather.

A singer from a young age, Beyoncé catapulted to stardom as a member of the female R&B group Destiny’s Child. Since launching her solo career, Beyoncé has become one of the best selling female artists of all time. She is tied with her husband, rapper and producer Jay-Z, as the most nominated artist in Grammy Award history with 88 nominations. She has won 32 Grammy Awards, making her the most honored artist in Grammys history.
