Happy birthday to Jeff Goldblum! Today the actor turns 72.

Goldblum was born on October 22, 1952 in West Homestead, Pennsylvania to Jewish parents, Shirley Jane Temeles, a radio broadcaster, and Harold Leonard Goldblum, a doctor and major in the U.S. Army during World War II. From a young age, Goldblum wanted to become an actor and at 17, went to New York City to study under renowned acting coach Sanford Meisner.

He began his career on stage before making his way to film. In 1986, he landed his breakout role in the sci-fi horror film The Fly. Goldblum has since starred in a variety of films, including some of the biggest blockbusters of the 1990s, Jurassic Park and Independence Day. He’s even made his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a part in Thor: Ragnorak. Nearly 30 years after appearing in the original film, Goldblum reprised his role as Dr. Ian Malcom in the sixth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise, Jurassic World: Dominion. He’ll next appear on the big screen in the much anticipated film adaptation of Wicked.
