Today we've added a Title field to our profiles. We've been noticing more and more cases of finding "King" or "President" or "Captain" in the first name field, and that's just not good genealogy. For years we've told users to use the Suffix field for such things, but it's evident this has not been a successful campaign. Most other genealogy sites support a Title field, so as of today Geni does too! (But unlike those other sites, on Geni it's multi-lingual!)

Please do not use the Title field for common courtesy titles such as Mr., Mrs., Señor, etc. -- these add no value to the genealogical profile and may cause bad matches in our search engine.

Very happy about it... Thank you very much Mike!

Thanks. What's going on with the ? beside the location fields?

My last message was directed at [[54].

Kevin Lawrence Hanit that's a problem created by the switch-over to the new Zendesk software that powers help.geni.com. We're working on a fix.

Thanks.

Mike, thank you ! Can't wait to try this out.

Thanks Mike.

Yes, a good idea, but could you also please post an example of a good profile that uses it, just to show the victims of Geni's "unsuccessful campaign" how it should look?

Wow, lots of titulation I need to do. I'll start with my immediate family and spiral out.

Just quoting this so that people see and absorb it. I am seriously dreading having to pull all of these once they start polluting the tree. Let's work together to use the field responsibly, everyone!

FYI we're running a job to move the most obvious English titles to the title field... here's an example of one of those: Sheikh Farid Uddin Masood Gangey Shakar Nizami

Geni elves have been busy and leave a wonderful gift that even opens itself up to some extent! Thanks very very much Mike and other Geni Elves.

Oh yes,Mike, have yourself a Mountain Dew! ¦¬)

Oh, SO much better than having to retype all those Kings into the display field! Yay!

How long should we wait to allow the automated part finish its magic and start moving titles manually?

Terrible. It's started already Mr William John Gray, Mr

Guess that user didn't click on the little blue circle with a ? then, bugger, more work for curators.

Has the TITL tag been added to the gedcom extract?

btw - Family Tree Builder (a MyHeritage product) version 8 is incompatible with Geni, unless very recently fixed - photos and others don't work - suggest using version 7.

Mike Stangel, you mind messaging me a list of the titles you're looking for in your script so that I can verify I'm also looking for them with SmartCopy. Thx

I see that the word "title" appears twice, one before the box and one inside. Can we make the inside one something like "e.g. Sir, Rev., not Mr or Mrs"?

In addition to the excellent suggestion from Liu Yao, could we also possibly shorten the box width to equal that of the suffix field? I'm already seeing novellas appear...maybe the shorter box woukd help.

Brilliant ! Thank you so much!!

Oh yaaay. Happy dance day!

How about having a (growing) list of text that Geni will not accept in the Title field, with an explanatory pop-up message.

Does Title map into GEDCOM's Prefix field, or is it a separate Geni creation?

Moving Titles from the Suffix field is not going to be helped by not being able to type more than 8 characters into the Suffix field of a Search page.

Ahh - that's what I came back to ask. Why is it called Title and not Prefix field? Titles can be prefixes or suffixes, but this is positioned as a prefix.

eg Charles "Martel", Mayor of the Palace is correct
vs Mayor of the Palace, Charles "Martel" is not

Mayor of the Palace is his title (job description), though - it's just not a prefix.

In my profiles managed and curated pages, I now have lots of profiles which have just gotten changed because they had titles in their first name fields.

One of the useful things about this is that I can easily see the profiles to be taken out.

As for instance early medieval Irish baronesses. No.

Great move !
