The family had acquired some confusions on Geni, so yesterday I took the following actions:

- she is not the same person as Jane Jefferson and was not born at “Shadwell”
- there is no support for a “Jane,” “Randolph” or “Bolling” name
- her parents are not known. Her children claimed cousin kinship with Pres. Jefferson. Many years of speculation, including DNA testing, seems to indicate that she may have been related to the Jeffersons & she was not likely as mixed race, but no firmer information than that (unless someone knows otherwise)
- she was a widow Collins when she married John Davis

Now we get into Davis family confusion.

WeRelate has a decent biography of him

John Davis, of Goochland County

And is firm that his parents are not known. He had been grafted into the Amherst County VA Davis family & merged into the Edgecombe County NC family, and acquired a military title and a middle name without supporting evidence.

Not all of his and Jemima’s known children have Geni profiles, so if someone wants to enter them, let a curator know so they can unlock (temporarily) for you.

Evidence for parents needs to be discussed. There was a “Descendants” group who did not claim any parents for him.

The most prolific descent seems to be from their son Robert D Davis, Sr. who married Avarilla Davis

Corrections welcome!

Thank you, I have gathered my info from Ancestry there is so much wrong info that it is confusing . Has DNA ever confirmed this line? I have DNA matched Native American line Powhatan through my Davis line. Thanks again for letting me know. Jim Cox

This group (not sure if it’s still going)

What I read was they were comparing DNA test results as well as their paper trails, and found no African American commonality. Not sure what they had on possible Native American.

Thank you Cousin Erica for the clean up. Pages 139-146 of Jack Ferguson's book Early TImes in Clinton County, Kentucky Vol. 1 has a bit of information on John Davis and family. Not all Jack Ferguson's information is correct, but it is fairly well researched on his end.

John settled in the Cumberland county in 1799 according to tax lists. His parents were from Wales. His mother was a Jefferson and was related to President Thomas Jefferson. from 'The Davis Family' C.E.W. Davis -8/25/1892.

He enlisted New Years Day 1776, in Botetourt, Virginia in Virginia Line. He served as a Private in Revolutionary War for 10 months before he became too ill to serve. His brother Thomas took his place while he recovered. After he recovered he served under generals Wayne, Steuben, Lafayette and Washington. He was at the siege of Yorktown where he became lightly wounded from a cannon splitting his gun barrel in two and setting him on fire.

He lived in Sevier County, Tennessee before moving to Cumberland, which became Wayne county and later Clinton County, Kentucky. He never remarried after Mourning died in 1804 and remained in Clinton County.

John's older brother Robert followed John to Clinton County. He was a cripple and did not serve in the Revolutionary War. He married Avarilla Wood he moved from Virginia to North Carolina, and then back to Virginia then to Sevier County, Tennessee and finally to Clinton County. The lived in the northern part of Clinton County.

When I saw you & Clinton County KY I knew I had to get this in better shape, and I’m probably closer related to this Davis line than I see now!

Great extract. Should we make parents for John Davis as from Wales? He had been grafted onto the Nathaniel Davis line, which has a family story of descent from a sister of Pocohantas; but based on what you posted and also the “descendant” group claiming no parents for him, I think we can say with more firmness it’s a different Davis family.

I could swear I’ve seen that Arvilla Name before.

Yes, I’m connecting through your Taylor / Staileys :

Martha (Mattie) Leona Stailey

Private Cousin Matt’s research helps answer your Native American question, at least, for a couple of generations.

- it looks like John Davis, of Goochland County was of Welsh origin

- Jefferson’s are supposedly of Welsh origin also, so it’s a consistent story

So if there’s NA, it’s not from this first Davis or Jefferson.

Thank you so much Erica, Yes I am in the Adventurer Research Team Group my Native American came through on Gedmatch Certain its Powhatan maybe I can figure it out from another line I have been trying to figure my Tinch line. I really appreciate yours and Matts help. Jim Cox

Are they in now?

I am always LATE to the party

I don’t know, but it’s not something I can work on now. When a source is shown then can be addressed.

Erica Howton no worries.
Not anything I am working on but ran into them doing some merging.
FS has them connected to "my" Davis.
