Abel West Phelps, 88 years old, died March 20, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. H.P. Gill, at Canton, Ohio. Mr. Phelps was born at Thompson, O., Oct 11, 1824. On May 29, 1852, he was united in marriage with Miss Sarah Brotzman and to them were given four children: Emma M. McKane of Troy, Pa.; Clinton A. Phelps of Madison, O.; John C. Phelps of Ellsworth, Kan.; and Lillie E. Gill of Canton, O. The greater part of his life was spent in Thompson till the death of his wife in 1884. He then made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Gill of Canton. Mr. Phelps was a well-informed man, a great reader, kind and gentle in manner, a man whose acquaintance was worth cultivating. The funeral service was held on Easter Sunday morning at Canton. The burial was at Maple Grove cemetery in Thompson. The daughter, Mrs. McKane of Pennsylvania, visited her father a short time previous to his death. The son, John C., from Kansas, reached Canton in time for the burial and will spend a short time with his sisters and brother, C.A. Phelps of Madison.
