About Adelheidt Bauman
MRS. ADALINE BAUMAN
Mrs. Adaline Bauman died on Sunday evening, March 29 at 8:20 o'clock at her home on Cook street. She was born October 23, 1834 in Schale, Germany. As a young woman of 19 years she immigrated to this country when ocean voyages were more tedious and less safe than now and when in this community there were but few settlers.
Her marriage in 1855, June 14, with Lambert Bauman led to establishing the Bauman homestead south of the present village of Barrington now occupied by the oldest son living, George Bauman and family.
To this home came eleven children, five of whom are dead. Those now living are according to seniority: Mrs. Emma Lageschulte, George Bauman, Miss Carrie Bauman, Mrs. Bernadine Gieske, Edward Bauman and Miss Anna Bauman. There are also four grandchildren and one great grandchild; Theodore Fred Suhr, of Yu Shien, China. The five sisters of the departed who survive are: Mrs. Catherine Landwer, Mrs. Caroline Elfrink, Mrs. Behardine Landwer, Mrs. Lizzie Cady of Goodwin, South Dakota and Mrs. Harry Miller of Gibbon, Minnesota.
Her father, Anton Brommelkamp, reached the centenary limits of 100 years. Her husband died April 16, 1890. Mrs. Bauman was converted soon after she came to this country under the labors of Rev. Jacob Schaefele when the only church of the community was at Deergrove, and to which the earnest settlers mended their ways with a zeal and exertion that puts to shame our modern tendencies for ease and conveniences. Fathers and mothers carried their children for miles to get the benefit of religious services, and oftentimes under great difficulties. She became a loyal member of the church and remained faithful unto the end.
During the last four years she has been an invalid and with quiet endurance she patiently accepted her lot with a devotion to await her Maser's call. In her lovely home she received the tender attention and care from her devoted children, whose greatest joy has been to attend to the needs of the mother and to apprehend whatever might contribute to her contentment and comfort. Greater devotion and loving regard for mother is seldom seen than was constantly practiced in this home. Frequently visitors came in to find mother Bauman in her chair with her bible on her lap, portraying her habits as well as the source of her spiritual life and longings. For she often expressed herself in the family circle as being somewhat homesick for the glory world in which she believed and for which her soul aspired. She now rests in peace, Her 60 years of life in this community has evidenced many changes to which she was witness. Blessed is the memory of her life.
