Agnes Patterson

The 1841 Census for Seedhill, Paisley Low, shows her as Agness Caulderwood, 46, widow of John Patterson, whom she married 10/2/1815 Neilston, Renfrewshire. In the same household were three older Patterson children, as well as three younger children, Agnes Hamilton, aged 14, whose mother was apparently Mary Leitch, and aged 7, Jean Leitch (possibly a sister or half-sister of Agnes), and Margrat Craig, aged 4.

It seems Agnes Caulderwood and Patterson fostered these younger children. It is also interesting to note that the Jones-Reid branch of the Cowdens in Australia, also have a Leitch connection predating the families' arrival in Australia: William Kydd married Elizabeth Leitch in 1809.

"Two of those minor children named above, Agnes Hamilton and Jean Leitch, might have been related, because there is a record of an Agnes Hamilton born to James Hamilton and Mary Leitch in 1827. The question remains, who exactly are the parents of these last three children?"

She died as Agnes Paterson 70, widow of a farm servant, on 19/11/1860 at 11 King Street, Paisley, daughter of John Calderwood, Blacksmith (deceased) and Isabella nee Locke (deceased). Informant was her son William Paterson.
