About Anthony Col Anthony of Lisheenboy Carroll, Sr., of Lisheenboy
Anthony Carroll, one of the brothers of Charles Carroll, the Settler, remained at the Birr Castle, Offley, Ireland after the evacuation of the Carroll's from their castle due to the Church Reformation. Anthony rented space in the castle from the English Family (The Parson's). The Parson Family is the only family who have lived in this castle since the Carroll's had to evacuate it back in the 1600's. Some "Carroll" artifacts remain in the castle today such as chalices, documents, papers, etc. used during the time the Carroll's lived in the castle. The Carroll's were chieftons (similar to kings) and they built and owned many castles in Ireland prior to the Church Reformation. The Birr Castle has been refurbished over the years, and its gift shop and gardens are open to the public year round.
