About Anthony Morris, (III), the Brewer
Anthony Morris Jr. (23 August 1654 – 24 October 1721) was a brewer, Quaker preacher, judge, and mayor of Philadelphia.
Note: Anthony Morris Jr. is denoted as Anthony Morris I resulting from the convention that he is the first Anthony Morris in the New World (despite being a Jr, and thus the second Anthony Morris). His son, Anthony, is known as the second Anthony Morris (in the New World) and also as Anthony Morris III.

Anthony Morris III (March 1682 – 23 September 1763) was a brewer, merchant, judge, assemblyman, and mayor of Philadelphia.
Morris was born in London, England, and immigrated with his family to New Jersey shortly after his birth. From the age of three, he spent his life in Philadelphia, son of Anthony Morris, Jr., one of the city's leading citizens. In 1696, the elder Anthony paid fellow brewer Henry Babcock 20 pounds (equal to £2,224.99 today) to place the younger Anthony in a seven-year indentured apprenticeship. In addition to establishing the Morris Brewery as one of colonial Philadelphia's most highly regarded, Morris followed his father as a prominent member of the Society of Friends in Philadelphia. From 1737, he served as an associate justice of the city court. He sat for several sessions as a member of the assembly, and like his father before him, served as mayor in 1738. He was re-elected in 1739, but chose not to serve. He died in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Morris's grandson, Samuel, was Captain of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry during the American Revolutionary War, which served with distinction as General George Washington's bodyguard during 1776 and 1777.

Mayor Elect In 1749, Morris was still serving as an Alderman for Philadelphia...what we would today know as a City Councilor. At the time, the Council was responsible for choosing the Mayor. For some reason, Morris was not at this meeting. But the other Alderman selected him as Mayor anyway! This is when something strange happened… The Disappearance The Council sent a messenger to Morris’ house to let him know he was Mayor. The messenger was told by Anthony’s wife he had left town and she didn’t know when he would return. The Council then decided to leave a note with Mrs. Morris as well as send someone on the road to find the prospective Mayor. Still, he was nowhere to be found! The Council Gives Up Three days later, the Council had gotten the hint...Anthony Morris was dodging them. Clearly he did not want to be Mayor again. The Council gave up on their efforts and just reappointed the sitting Mayor (William Attwood) for another year. Morris returned soon thereafter and continued as a leading Quaker and Master brewer till he passed away in 1763.

"Anthony Morris was brought to America by his parents, when he was about ten months old. They landed, towards the close of 1682, or at the beginning of 1683, at Burlington, in West New Jersey, where the "Friends" had already begun to establish themselves."
