Antonio Lucero dies at Las Vegas home
East Las Vegas, New Mexico, June 27 - Former State Prohibition Officer Antonio Lucero, aged 59, for two terms Secretary of State of New Mexico, died at his home here this morning at 5:30 of stomach trouble. He was just recently relieved of the office of state prohibition enforcement officer.
Mr. Lucero, New Mexico's first Secretary of State, was for a quarter of a century a leader in Democratic politics in New Mexico. He was editor and owner of La Voz del Pueblo, at Las Vegas, from 1893 to 1912, and hi death came just as he was about to resume the active editorial management of the newspaper. He served in the state House of Representatives, was a delegate to the National Democratic convention in 1904, and last year took an active part in the state campaign, touring New Mexico with R. H. Hanna, candidate for governor. He leaves a family of seven children.

Mr. Lucero was a devout Roman Catholic and all members of his family belonged to the Catholic church. Mr. Lucero took an active part in the order of Knights of Columbus, but he also joined other orders including the Spanish-American Alliance and Fraternal Union.
Despite his busy life of many decades, Mr. Lucero found time to serve with the Prince Rifles of the New Mexico militia, holding the positions of first lieutenant and later captain from 1890 to 1893.
Mr. Lucero was the father of seven children, all of whom survive him. They are:
- Mrs. Aurora R. White
- Antonio Jr.
- Delia M.
- Julia
- Edmundo M.
- Eleanor, and
- Arturo Francis Paul.
His wife was Miss Julianita Romero, of Las Vegas, whom he married April 8, 1893. She died in Santa Fe May 17, 1915.
The state house was closed and the flag on the dome lowered to half mast during the funeral of former Secretary of State Lucero.
Mr. Lucero was well known in Roy and had many friends here, he having visited in Roy many times and made numerous addresses at this place.
