ACCIDENT NO. 27 – May 18, 1911 - John Magnetti, Red Jacket Shaft, C. & H. John Magnetti, an Italian, employed as a laborer came to his death on this day by a fall of rock. At an inquest conducted over his body by Coroner Fisher the following witnesses were examined:
William Carmichael: “I knew the deceased. He was a laborer working in my gang filling cars and running dirt. We were running dirt from the 58th to the 63rd level. We left the 59th level about a quarter after eleven. I stayed there to see that the trammers did not dump any cars while they were in the chute. When they got just below the 61st level a small rock became dislodged and went down the chute and struck Magnetti in the head. I saw the rock and called to them and waved my lamp. I saw Bessonen get out of the way but Magnetti did not move. I saw his head droop so I knew he was struck even before I left the 59th level to go down to him. The rock came from somewhere between the 58th and 59th levels."
Bernard Bessonen: “I work in the same gang as the previous witness. We started from the 59th and got down as far as the 61st when I heard someone call to get out of the way and I got in the level. Magnetti did not get out and was struck by the rock. I don't know why he did not move, We picked him up just below the 61st level.”
Verdict: "We, the jury find that the said John Magnetti came to his death by being struck by a rock at the 61st level of Red Jacket Shaft, South of No. 2, causing a fracture of the skull, May 18, 1911."
