About Archibald Gillies

The Highland Clearances in Skye, like in other parts of the Scottish Highlands and Islands, involved the forced eviction of tenants from their land to make way for sheep farming. This period, roughly from 1750 to 1870, saw mass depopulation, with people moved from land they had inhabited for generations. On Skye, approximately 40,000 people were affected by writs of removal, with many forced to emigrate.
