About Benjamin Moshe Schafler
He was in business and at one time he owned a grocery store and at another time, a liquor store in New York. He arrived in this country on a boat in 1920. Historically, the family has a tradition of being descended in a direct line from the brother-in-law of the Baal Shem Tov, Reb Gershon Kitover,(from the town of kutov) as he married the sister of the Baal Shem. He lived for some years in Eretz Yisrael including Hebron and Jerusalem. The Baal Shem, as is well known, lived in the Carpathian Mountain region. Benjamin Schafler was from Bukovina which was part of the Austria Hungarian Empire and he served in that Army. After world war 1 , Bukovina became part of Romania. Now it is in the Ukraine. Benjamin Schafler came to the United states by boat in 1920. The name of the boat was the Amsterdam .. Eventually, he was naturalized and became a citizen of the United States. His family were Viznitzer Hasidim.
