About Bertha Thompson
Two Betsy's in the 1870 Census
She appears to have been called Betsy in the 1870 census. According to that census, they had two daughters named Betsey aged two years apart - one 9 years old and another 7 years old. One of these is almost certainly Bertha, who was born in 1862 and is attested elsewhere. She was 8 years old at the time of the census.
The other Betsy is not attested in any other document I've seen, and since Knud Iversen went off to war and died in 1862 (the year that Bertha was born), it would have been impossible for him to have had another child with Dorothea after Bertha. And Bertha didn't remarry until 1865, so it seems that the 1870 census was simply mistaken on this point.
