About "Betty" Elizabeth Katherine Hart
Betty enjoyed a very happy childhood in Pocatello, Idaho, a thriving railroad center. Her father was a pharmacist and owned the first drugstore in town. Her parents gave her imported dolls from France and Germany. She played with them as if they were real people. She loved to go for rides in the cart pulled by their Shetland pony. She and her cousin, Lucille, went to the soda fountain at the drugstore just before closing and made hot fudge sundaes. What treats and combinations they made.
Betty's parents divorced during the Depression and her mother took the four children and moved to Oakland, California. Betty graduated from high school and studied art at Mills College, a prestigious school for girls. Her artwork was displayed in Gumps of San Francisco, a luxury home furnishings store.
Betty married Ray Hart, a young dairy chemist, in Berkeley, California. Three years later she was left a widow with a baby boy. She designed clothes in Hollywood for the singing King Sisters and for the wives of several motion picture stars. Then, to provide more stability for her young son, she worked as a bookkeeper. She worked for Eastman Kodak, the Department of the Navy and Sloan's, a fine furniture store.
Betty loved to create beautiful things. Throughout her life her homes were always artistically decorated. Her murals still adorn the walls of the Senior Citizen high rise apartments in Salt Lake City.
