About Capt Henry Trefethen

Captain Henry Trefethen, was born Newcastle, N. H. to Henry Trefethen and Sarah . Res. Bet. 1760 and July 1777 Newcastle,N.H. Bet. Sept, 1768 and 1777, Kittery,Me Dover,N.H. in and after 1796.

He married Phebe Kalox? ( only one reference to her last name ever found.So it consider it not proven) They were married 1756.

Occ. Cabinetmaker, shipwright and trader. Also listed as a Joiner in legal papers dated 1760.

Veteran of the Revolutionary War.

He was at the battle of Louisburg, with Captain Pepperell's Regiment. died of consumption at Cape Britton I. , Canada.in 1797

Buried at Cemetery Dover, N.H., which dates back to 1633.

He was conveyed land , most likely from parents in 1736. In 1760, his wife Phebe conveyed same lant to Joseph and Christopher Amazeen. ( S 129 Rock Co Deeds 22:33 and 63:408)

As early as 1769 according to History of US Navy Yard at Portsmouth by Rear Adm. Geo. Preble, he was buying as much as 34 acres of land on Seavey's Island.

Nov. 15, 1784 he purchased more land , 16 aces , from Stephen Seavey , on the island, which later became known as Trefethen's Island.

He purchased Monhegan Island from the Bickford Family for 300 pounds on Oct. 2, 1777. but because of the death of George Bickford , the conveyence of the deed was delayed until Feb,16, 1790.

He was still buying land on the island as late as Aug 25, 1796 He owned all of Seavey's Trefenten. and most of if not all of Monhegan.
