About Captain John Herndon
John Herndon enlisted in the Virginia Militia during the U.S. Revolutionary War from Frederick Co. Virginia on September 26, 1777. He was appointed as assistant Commissary by Wm. Green Munford D.C.G. Virginia Line. Later Served under the Quartermasteer General's Dept. with the rank of Captain under Wm. Finnie D.Q.M.G. The length of his service is not stated but he is reported on duty July 6, 1779. About 1845 his widow was granted a pension of $480.00 per annum and this was increased to $600.00 per annum.
