About Captain Thomas Hogan, RE, MBE
Was Company Sergeant-Major of the 55th Field Company of the Royal Engineers during WWI before being promoted to Captain.
His retirement from the Royal Engineers was mentioned in the London Gazette:
Capt. Thomas Hogan, M.B.E., ret. pay, to be Capt. 30th June 1923, with seniority 1st Dec. 1917.
After his retirement from the army he got a job as the gateman at the ICI Chemical works in Manchester and had been promoted to foreman by the time of his death.
The story in the family is that his death was connected to exposure to poison gas during WWI. There is no mention of this in the relevant war diaries and we don't have his medical records, but trench nephritis was one of the main medical issues at the front, although its cause was never conclusively pinned down.
