"Carlo Valmorbida’s background in Italy was from a farming background. His father, who also worked in Australia between 1924-1928, and then returned to Italy, became a merchant dealing in dairy products. However World War 2 raged through their village (Valli del Pasubio) at the foot of the Dolomite mountains in northern Italy, and in 1949 he left his hometown to come to Australia, with the idea of returning home soon.

...

In the 1950s, together with his brothers Carlo, Saverio, Tarcisio and Mariano, he ventured into the import of foodstuff from Italy, established ‘Conga Foods’ and they began to make their fortune by servicing the needs of the local Italian community. They later diversified by founding the two Italian newspapers ‘Il Globo’ and ‘La Fiamma’, and in 1980 acquired a wine company, Mitchelton, and later the Woorinen Vineyard, both in north-central Victoria. Over the years they made their fortune in Melbourne “thanks to our irreprehensible behaviour – he explains - and to our spirit of entrepreneurship… All in all, we have become respected for our work”. (Veneti nel Mondo website, 2002)

In 2007, the family businesses continue in the hands of the Valmorbida second and third generations, including cousins Paul, Adrian, Michael and John."

"A world of difference

GRAEME PHILLIPS | July 14, 2010 12.00am IT might seem a bit of a stretch to link an Italian migrant to Australia with an Italian sex goddess of the 1960s, tinned tuna, peeled tomatoes, coffee and a bottle of Catalina Sounds pinot noir from New Zealand

However, look on the back of a tin of La Gina Italian whole peeled tomatoes and you'll see where it all started - a picture of Carlo Valmorbida in his store in Melbourne in 1963.

Carlo started importing food and wine products from his homeland to service the growing Italian community in Melbourne. He went on to establish the Sirena brand of tinned tuna, Lavazza coffee and named his imported tomatoes after his favourite Italian actress, Gina Lollobrigida.

Sadly, Carlo died a fortnight ago, but the family still owns their original grocery store and the importing business and brands, while his son, John, has expanded the business over recent decades to include Australian and New Zealand wines, vineyards and Red+White national wine distributors.

At the wine end, under the umbrella name Endeavour Vineyards, the company's brand portfolio consists of Alta, Sticks, Tar and Roses, One Planet, RockBare, Mojo, Nanny Goat, Totara, Clayfork Vineyard and Barossa Babe in Australia, and Catalina Sounds and Crowded House in Marlborough, New Zealand."
