About Charles Cottle
Charles Cottle and his wife Mary Diamond left England for New Zealand on the 'Catherine Stewart Forbes' in 1841. Two sons, Charles and William, were also on the passenger list aged three and two. Charles (Snr) died shortly after his arrival in 1841. In the NZ Journal of 1848 'Deaths in the Colony Since Foundation of the Colony' it is recorded '1841 Wife of Charles Cottle aged 30 decline'. Mary's age at death differs to that recorded on the passenger list to NZ. The two small boys were taken into care by John and Amelia Gill and Charles later married one of their daughters, Mary Ann on 25th december 1861. William (1835) married Catherine Anna Maria Mee on 24th April 1860 and the couple left New Zealand around 1860 and settled in Australia. At the time of their marriage William's occupation was given as 'Shoemaker'.
