About Charles Edgton Johnson
Charles E. Johnson, 64, Native of Mesa, Dies: Mesa—Charles E. Johnson, 64, of 2129 W. Third Street, a native of Mesa, died yesterday in St. Joseph’s Hospital at Phoenix. Mr. Johnson, graduated from Mesa High School, lived in Phoenix, Lakeside, Show Low and Snowflake. His father, the late Joel E. Johnson, was said to have been the first man to grow navel oranges in the Valley. Mr. Johnson was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He severed three missions for his church and was bishop of the Show Low Ward for five years. He was a merchant until his retirement. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gwendolyn West Johnson, four sons, L. Duane, and D. Kendall, both of Provo, Utah, and Craig V., on a mission in Mexico, and Raleigh W. of Phoenix, three daughters, Valaine, Linda Faye, and Gwenda Lynn Johnson, all of Mesa; two sisters, Mrs. Rose Ogden, and Mrs. Janet MacKay, both of California; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Mesa 143th Ward chapel of the LDS church, 1054 W. Second Place. The chapel is on ground which is almost the exact location of the house in which Mr. Johnson was born. Bishop M. Grand Christensen will officiate. Burial will be in Mesa Cemetery. Friends may call at Meldrum Mortuary from 4 to 8 p.m. tomorrow and Monday morning before services in the Ward Relief Society Room.
