Charles Cheers Wakefield, 1st and last Viscount Wakefield was born on 12 December 1859.1 He was the son of John Wakefield and Mary Cheers.1 He married Sarah Frances Graham, daughter of John Graham, on 17 February 1888.1 He died on 15 January 1941 at age 81, without issue.1
He was educated at Liverpool Institute, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.1 He was founder of C.C. Wakefield & Company, dealer in lubricating oils and appliances, including 'Castrol' in 1899.1 He held the office of Sheriff of the City of London between 1907 and 1908.1 He was invested as a Knight Bachelor in 1908.1 He was created 1st Baronet Wakefield [U.K.] on 16 February 1917.1 He was created 1st Baron Wakefield of Hythe, co. Kent [U.K.] on 20 January 1930.1 He succeeded to the title of 1st Viscount Wakefield [U.K.] on 28 June 1934.1 He was invested as a Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1936.1 Citations
