Christy Turlington's superlative modelling career spans three decades and is showing no signs of stopping. One of the original supermodels, she has graced multiple Vogue covers since her debut appearance in July 1986. Turlington has since become a vocal ambassador for Christian Action Research and Education (CARE) and has set up her own charity Every Mother Counts. She is a mother to two children.

Turlington was born on January 2 1969 in Walnut Creek, California. Her mother is of Salvadoran descent.

Fourteen-year-old Turlington was scouted by a local photographer whilst out riding her horse with her sister in 1983.

Turlington first began learning yoga in 1988, a practice which now plays a central part in her spiritual wellbeing and health. This inspired the launch of Nuala, a yoga clothing line in collaboration with Puma in the year 2000.

Modelling alongside Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell, Turlington graced the January cover of British Vogue in 1990, photographed by Peter Lindbergh. The supermodels were then cast for George Michael's video, Freedom! '90. This was not Turlington Burns' first music video - she had starred in the Duran Duran video, Notorious, in September 1986.

Turlington became the face of Calvin Klein in 1988 for the brand's signature fragrance, Eternity. Her name eventually became synonymous with the company particularly after working alongside Mark Vanderloo for the 1995 campaign. Turlington went on to return as the face of the brand in May 2014, this time alongside husband Ed Burns. The campaign was shot by Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matatin for the brand's 25th Anniversary Edition bottles. Calvin Klein supported Turlington's charity Every Mother Counts through the campaign as 100% of the proceeds from US sales of the perfumes were donated for one week.

In 1993, Turlington was immortalised as the model for 120 mannequins commissioned from Pucci by the Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Following the loss of her father to lung cancer in 1997, she set up the award-winning campaign smokingisugly.com, a website designed to raise awareness of lung cancer.

Turlington launched a skincare line, Sundari, in October 1999.

Yoga enthusiast Turlington posed in the Rooster position on a Time cover in October 2001.

Turlington married the actor Ed Burns in San Francisco in 2002, wearing a dress by Galliano. It was then that she adopted the surname, Turlington Burns. U2 frontman Bono, who shared a 1992 cover of British Vogue with her, walked her down the aisle.

Later that year, Turlington turned her hand to writing, with her first book, Living Yoga: Creating a Life Practice. Speaking of her dedication to yoga, she told Vogue- "nothing makes me feel as centered as this mental, spiritual and physical practice".

She gave birth to a daughter named Grace in 2003, and three years later the couple welcomed a son, Finn.

In 2008, Turlington starred in Chanel's spring eyewear and handbag campaigns.

She enrolled at Columbia University to do a Masters degree in Public Health in 2009.

Later that year, Turlington became the muse behind Yves Saint Laurent's autumn/winter 2009 manifesto, photographed by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

In 2010, Turlington founded the non-profit organisation, Every Mother Counts (EMC).The charity aims to help stop preventable deaths which occur worldwide due to pregnancy problems. The following year, she ran the New York Marathon to raise money for the organisation.

Turlington directed and narrated the documentary No Woman, No Cry in April 2010, which previewed at the Tribeca Festival. The film documented maternal health issues within Guatemala, Bangladesh, Tanzania and the United States.

Recognised for her philanthropic efforts, Turlington was selected to take part in the Citizens of Humanity film series, Just Like You, in 2013.

In January 2014, Turlington became the global ambassador for Imedeen's beauty supplements.

Turlington premiered her second film Every Mile, Every Mother, on May 2 2014. The film depicts the Hood To Coast Relay, a 200 mile race across Oregon.
