Voted in every US presidential election until the time of his death, and at the age of 103 traveled 6 miles through a severe storm to cast his vote for Winfield Scott. He generally voted Whig.
Enlisted in a Massachusetts regiment in December 1775. Served under General George Washington through the crossing of the Delaware and at Valley Forge, and had served for a time as one of his bodyguards (he would therefore be one of the few Germans who were not born in Pennsylvania to serve in that capacity - record of service said to exist in the National Archives). While at Valley Forge, became a Freemason, likely within the same (military?) lodge that Washington attended while at the winter encampment, and through the organization, associated with Lafayette, Steuben, Knox, Greene, Lincoln, and Dearborn.
