Chapter 11, The Fisher Line</line><line /><line> Page 217</line><line /><line></line><line /><line> David Shepard Jones, the oldest child, was born in 1808. We do not have the date of his death which occurred in the 1870s. He inherited the property which his grandfather William Fisher had purchased... for nine hundred pounds of current money, March 18, 1791. The property consisted of one thousand acres of land including about four hundred acres between Deep Creek and Little Creek on which there was a saw mill and a grist mill, dam and pond. The mills, pond and landing on Newport River were built by Robert Williams about 1773. David S. Jones had prospered and lived well. As a result of the Civil War he lost his investment in Negro Slaves and suffered from the generally bad economic conditions in the South. As a result, he became despondent and required the careful attention of his son until his death.</line><line /><line></line><line /><line> (... more - see text)</line><line /><line></line><line /><line> ~~~~</line><line /><line> This is a portion transcribed from about 25 pages of a 1905 superior court file, in which William B. Duncan was restored to his role of administrator of David Shepard Jones' estate. The purpose was to try to collect monies due to the estate from the U. S. Government and the Army as a result of damages and goods taken by the Army during the Civil War. Claim was $200,000 was owed to the estate. The point being, Duncan's affidavit states a definite date of DSJ's death. </line><line /><line></line><line /><line> Sep 4 1905 The heirs of David Shepard Jones authorize William B. Jones, deceased; that at and during the time over which his powers as administrator under the original letters of administration extended, the feeling, engendered by the war, which then existed between the different sections of the nation (especially between the North and the South) rendered nugatory all efforts to collect said claim, although said administrator used all due diligence to make said collection, even to the extent of employing legal counsel and enlisting the aid of the Representative in Congress from .......</line><line /><line></line><line /><line> 3. 1723 DUELLAS LINE: Per Beaufort North Carolina by Mamre Marsh Wilson and Beaufort Historical Association: SHEPARD FAMILY</line><line /><line> The Shepard name is more closely associated with the area of Carteret County known today as Morehead City, but the family was also important in the history of Beaufort. </line><line /><line> In 1723 David Shepard bought 170 acres from John Schackelford at the mouth of the Newport River bounded by Bogue Sound on the south and Calico Creek on the north. The son of Thomas Shepard, David came from Virginia, settled in Beaufort, married, and bought property along the Newport River in the Mill Creek area as well as in todays Newport town, which was known as Shepardsville during the Civil War. David was also a merchant, ship builder, and plantation owner.</line><line /><line> In April 1752, the vestry minutes of St. Johns Parish record the qualification of David Shepard, Jr., who was chosen church warden. There is some confusion in the sequence of David Shepards, for in May 1754 the vestry minutes recorded an item to the effect that Major David Shepard rendered an account for his deceased son David Shepard, a former church warden. This tends to suggest that his father did not die in 1748, but in 1775 as other information states.</line><line /><line> In his will of 1774, Shepard gave his sons Solomon and Elijah the point of land known first as Reads Neck, then as Shepards Point, and today as Morehead City. William Shepard, a grandson of David, later came into possession of the Reads Neck property plus adjoining acreage, where he built his home plantation. In 1791l he sold the 600 acres from the mouth of the Newport River west to William Fisher.
