Dorcas J. Van Duyne, Aug. 10, 1928 - Feb. 27, 2014, Dorcas J. Van Duyne of Rochester and formerly of Argos, passed away at 12:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014, at Wynnfield Crossing of Rochester. On Aug. 10, 1928, Dorcas was born in Fulton County to Charles and Irma O. Schertz Riddle. Growing up, she shared her childhood with a sister, Norita and a brother Charles Lee. While in elementary school, she skipped second grade and later graduated as salutatorian of the Richland Center High School, class of 1945. Her brother, Charles Lee was the valedictorian of the same class. At a Rural Youth meeting, Dorcas met Fredrick R. Van Duyne. They often went to square dances with the Rural Youth. After dating for three years and Dorcas turned 21, and they married on Sept. 11, 1949, at the Brethren Church in Tiosa. As a vibrant homemaker and mother of a daughter and six sons, Dorcas kept very busy and involved with her family's activities. They traveled to all 50 states and many National Parks creating treasured memories. After her family was raised she worked at the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service of Plymouth for 15 years. Music was a very important part of her life. Dorcas played the piano for the Tiosa Brethren Church and for the Riverview Community Church. She also played for Life Care Center, Hickory Creek and Wynnfield Crossing for a number of years. Dorcas enjoyed singing in the Marshall County and the Fulton County Choirs. While at the Tiosa Brethren Church, Dorcas was ordained as a deacon and was the president of the Woman's Missionary Society. Dorcas and Joyce Lewis hosted Child Evangelism Fellowship meetings every Wednesday evening for the school kids for several years. Dorcas was true to her name as found in Acts 9:36. Accomplished with handwork, Dorcas was very talented with her needle and thread. With love in every stitch she made quilts and baby blankets for her family and dresses for missions. She crocheted, embroidered and made her own Christmas Cards to share with family and friends. A bit competitive, Dorcas entered her pies or other baked goods in the 4 -H Fair Open Class Exhibit. Her family always enjoyed their job of taste testing. Often, her chief competition was her friends from the Walnut Ruralettes Home Ec Club. To relax, she could often be found playing a game of solitaire on her iPad. Dorcas is lovingly remembered by her husband Fredrick; a daughter, Linda Gates and husband Troy of Huntington; six sons Richard Van Duyne and wife Barbara of Rochester, Kenneth Van Duyne and wife Sherry of Ashland, Ohio, Dennis Van Duyne and wife Ann of Ligonier, Mickey Van Duyne and wife Cathy of Plymouth, Tim Van Duyne and wife Tracy of Rochester, Kevin Van Duyne and wife Jill of Wabash; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Charles Lee Riddle and wife Lola of Argos; a brother-in-law, John Kuhn of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
