About Dr. Andrew Robertson
His wives and children on Geni need a lot of work.
Dr. Andrew Robertson, "a surgeon and physician of great eminence, b. Inverness, Scotd., 1716; grad., Edinburgh, Univ.; entered the army in Flanders; was in battle of Fontenay, 1745; with Braddock in Pa., 1755; escaped with remnant of his Regt., 20 in number, living for days on acorns; returned to Eng., resigned his com'n, and em. to America with wife and son. Landing at Indian Banks, Rich'd Co., Va., he was entertained most kindly by a Scotch mcht., Mr. Glasscock [whose daughter he later married]; settled in Lanc. Co, Va.; became leading physician in the No. Neck. A gentleman in feeling and manners, a man of intelligence and of enterprise, his influence was great; uniting with Col. Jas. Gordon he contributed not a little to the prosperity of the Presby. ch. in his region, being also an elder. He d. Mar. 1, 1795, ae. 79. He had James Monroe and Margaret McIntosh." (Hayden, 347n., citing Foote S. I. 368)
This last statement is controversial because there is no other evidence to support it. The idea seems to have originated because Andrew Robertson had a wife with the unusual maiden name Roysdon, while James Monroe Roberson gave one of his sons the name Roysdon.
Andrew Robertson was married four times. The only reference to any of his children by his first wife Ann ? [maybe Munro] is in the diary of Dr. Gordon from Lancaster Co who mentions "Dr Robetson and his poor children." However, Dr. Robertson left many accounts, court records, cases, and a very detailed will. There are references to each and every child except James Monroe Roberson.
