About Dr. Anstruther John Corfe
Dr Corfe practised in Glen Innes in the early part of the 20th century. (Land of the Beardies History Bulletin, Vol. 21, December 1993, p. 11) In this article Arthur Crotty states: ‘Dr Corfe’s house and surgery were set on about an acre of land on the north western corner of Wentworth and Macquarie Streets.’
In 1930 Corfe was a member of the Glen Innes Chamber of Commerce and appears on a Glen Innes professional list of doctors 1910 to 1941. (Sommerlad and Cameron 1972: 300 and 381)
He is listed as a medical practitioner in the Sands NSW Directory 1930 and in the NSW Post Office Commercial Directory 1942.
There are photographs of Corfe in NSW State Records (NO R2409) and Sommerland and Cameron (1972:170)
A detailed biography of Dr Corfe was published in the Glen Innes Examiner, 6 January 1942 stating that he was born in New Zealand 64 years previously and had come to Toowoomba at an early age where his father was headmaster of the Toowoomba Grammar School. He took up medical studies at Sydney University; trained at Hong Kong; served at Peak Hill and then came to Glen Innes. He remained in practice at Glen Innes for 32 years apart from when he served overseas with the Australian Medical Corps.
The National Archives hold his military service records (digital barcode 3420940). These state that he was a Captain and medical officer in the Australian Medical Corpsl that he enlisted at age 40 years and 5 months; that he was married and that his wife was Bertha Campbell Corfe living at Strathbogie Station, Emmaville, near Deepwater.

Captain, A.A.M.C., A.I.F., England and France. Enlisting and sailing in November, 1916, was at Tidworth, Lark Hill and Harefield Hospitals and No. 2 Australian General Hospital, Boulogne. Then, joining 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station, Steenwerck, served as member of special surgical team, working at 44th (British) C.C.S., Poperinghe and 56th, La Bohaine, and until demobilisation. Early education at Christs College, Christchurch, New Zealand, Brentwood (England) and Toowoomba Grammar Schools. Later at St. Pauls College.
