Dr. Charles W. Fischer, Jr. – 89 – of Ventnor went home to be with the Lord on March 11, 2017. Mr. Fischer, known as "Charlie" to many of his friends, was born and raised in Atlantic City. He graduated Atlantic City High School and then attended Cornell University, College of Arts and Sciences, in Ithaca, NY where he earned a Bachelor's degree in 1947 and a PhD in 1951. He was a member of numerous collegiate organizations including the American Chemical Society, Pi Alpha Xi, and the academic honor society Phi Beta Kappa. Some of his fondest college memories were of canoeing and hiking in the Adirondack Mountains.

After college he followed in the footsteps of three prior generations of Fischers by joining the family business, Fischer Flowers. He also opened a flower shop in the Haddon Hall hotel. He developed a deep passion for ornamental horticulture and focused his life's efforts on the family's retail and wholesale greenhouse operation, Fischer Greenhouses. There he oversaw the hybridizing, propagation and growing of many beautiful varieties of plants including annuals, mums, lilies, poinsettias, gloxinias, streptocarpuses, "Linwood Hardy" azaleas, and most famously, "Fischer African Violets" --- his pride and joy --- for which he was known nationally and internationally.

He hosted countless visitors at the greenhouses who marveled with him at the beauty of his plants. He had a large violet mail order business, and was a proud annual vendor at the Philadelphia Flower Show. He was a Board member and participant at the annual Seeley Conference at Cornell.
He was a committed Christian who put his heart and soul into his work. He referred to the flower business as a "God glorifying business" and dedicated himself accordingly.

He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Andrew by the Sea Lutheran Church in Atlantic City and held various leadership positions throughout the years including Deacon, President of Church Council, and Treasurer of the FMC Committee.

He is predeceased by his father Charles W. Fischer, Sr., mother Edna (Alderfer) Fischer, and loving wife of many years Eugenia (Vellner) Fischer.
He is survived by his son Charles and his wife Jennifer (Meisenhelter), Grandchildren Alexis and Jacob, Sisters Frances Michael and Betty Ann Francis, Nephews Richard Michael and his wife Sara, Robert Michael, Scott, Clayton, and Charles Paul Francis, and Cousin Frances Weir.

He will always be remembered for his patriotic spirit, genuine kindness, generosity, and his ability to make friends and strangers, alike, smile. He was an incredibly hard-working man who was truly salt of the Earth. His most important role in later years was that of "Pop Pop Plants" to his two loving grandchildren with whom he created many special memories.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attended services on Saturday March 18, 2017 at St. Andrew by the Sea Lutheran Church, 936 Baltic Avenue, Atlantic City. Visitation is from 10 to 11 am, with services to follow. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
