About Dr. Lawrence Van Hook
A Patriot of the American Revolution for NEW JERSEY with the rank of CAPTAIN. DAR Ancestor # A118106
Lawrence VanHook is the only Revolutionary War veteran buried in Jackson County, Iowa, and one of a very few buried in the state of Iowa. VanHook served as a captain of the lst Battalion of the New Jersey Militia. He was named a First Leiutenant after being in the militia only 9 days. After the Revolutionary War he practiced medicine in Philadelphia until 1845 when he moved to an area northeast of Maquoketa, Iowa. The DAR Chapter in Jackson County, Iowa is named after him.
