About Dr. Mendel Mazer
Mendel was born in Manchester Ct in 1909. He was the youngest son of a youngest son. After graduating from Yale in 1931 he entered medical school at the urging of his father. At the time he graduated from college, he wanted to be an architect, but it was the middle of the depression and there was virtually no construction going on.
In 1938 he married Lilillan Cohen, who grew up across the street in Springfield. His first son, Frederick, was born in 1939 while Mendel completed his residence in Boston. After completing his residence in Boston, he returned to Springfield to start private practice and start raising a family.
But in 1942, shortly after the birth of his second son, Michael, he entered the Army and spent the next years in training and finally in the South Pacific. He served as a battalion physician and participated in landings in Tinian, Saipan, and Okinawa.
After the war ended, he returned to Springfield and entered into practice. He practiced at the Mercy Hospital in Springfield until 1977 when he retired. His specialty was cardiology.
After the war he had two additional children, John and Linda.
