DOCTOR KRONFELD DIED ON JANUARY 1, 1980 AT THE AGE OF 80 AFTER several bouts of serious ilnes. He issurvivedbyhiswife of 50years, Christin (Cristl), two children, Peter a radiologist, a daughter, Eleanor and five grandchildren. He was born in Vienna, Austria, the son of a doctor of medicine. His life long interest in physiology began as Instructor in Physiology at the University of Vienna betwen1921-24. He obtained his MD degree in1923, and completed his residency in Ophthalmology at that institution in1927. During that time, he published articles on the development of the trout, gascontent of the aqueous, and biochemistry and physiology of the lens. After coming to the United States, he worked as an Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Chicago between1927-1933, continuing publications on glaucoma and metabolism of the lens in addition to such varied subjects as refraction, visual pathways, efect of drugs on the intrinsic muscles of the eye, uveitis, cyanosisretinae, retinal tears and the function of reattached retina. During the nextsix years, he was Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Peiping Union Medical College, continuing his work on glaucoma and retinal detachment. In1938, he published "Introduction to Ophthalmology, "a relatively short but eruditework, stressing pathophysiology of the eye which stimulated me immensely as a medical student and beginning resident. When he returned to the United States, he served as Assistant Professor at Northwestern University from 1941-43, and then was appointed Associate Professorand in 1947 Professor of Ophthalmology at the Ilinois Eye and Ear Infirmary of the University of Ilinois College of Medicine. Working in an"ivory tower" on the third flor of the dilapidated Infirmary, he continued his work on glaucoma, standardization of tonometers, tonography, and retinal detachments, being on eofthepioneers of ful thickness scleral resections. In true American style, he was a Professor with a dramatic didactic style which had a hypnotic efect on his students and practicing ophthalmologists. Unfortunately because of this, some residents would be quoting something he had taught years after he had changed his opinions because of new evidence. From 1959 until his retirement in 1969, he was Professor and Head of the Department of Ophthal-mology at the University of Ilinois College of Medicine, during which time a new Ilinois Eye and Ear Infirmary was constructed adjacent to the medical school. He published 117 papers, two books including "The Hu- man Eye in Anatomical Transparencies," and four chapters in books.
Doctor Kronfeld became a member of the American Ophthalmological Society in 1932, and received its Howe Medal in 1970. In addition he received many other honors such as the Prize of the Vienna Ophthalmological Society and Proctor Medal Award. As a person, Doctor Kronfeld possessed an old-world gallantry towards women, an ability causing admiration and dismay in more mundane husbands. His intense interest in the arts centered largely a round music, and he participated actively in string quartets with his viola. He was able to continue horse back riding and swimming in his beautiful retirement home in the fothils oft heTucson Mountains. His well-manicured yard contained most examples of desert flora. However, this did not preclude working in his extensive library containing a well-used microscope. The dynamic personality of Peter C.Kronfeld will not beforgotten, and his exciting and devoted wife, Cristl, has the admiration and sympathy of alt hose who know her.
