Samuel Guthrie (1782–1848) was an American physician. He invented a form of percussion powder and also the punch lock for igniting it, which made the flintlock musket obsolete. He discovered chloroform independently in 1831.

"Dr. Guthrie was of dark complexion, medium stature, slender build, slightly stooping figure, and thoughtful mien; his head was well-formed and of full medium size, features slightly oval, nose prominent and a little irregular in shape."

Samuel Guthrie

1782 - 1848
Born in Brimfield, Massachusetts in 1782 ...

Physician and Inventor. Samuel Guthrie attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York, now Columbia University. In 1804 he married Sybil Sexton. During the War of 1812, he held the position of examining surgeon. In 1817 Dr. Guthrie moved to Sackets Harbor, Jefferson, NY and began practice as a rural physician. He is created with the discovery of chloroform in 1831. Eugene Soubeiran, of France, and Justus von Liebig, of Germany, also made this discovery in the same year but as Guthrie published first, he is generally given credit for it's discovery. Other discoveries were a percussive gun power that enable the priming of flintlock muskets to be replaced by the percussion caps used in the Civil war and the conversion of potato starch into molasses. He and his wife are buried a short distance from their home which still stands and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. At Ft. Drum, Jefferson, New York, the Guthrie Ambulatory Health Care Clinic was dedicated to his memory in May 1991.
