Dr. Walter Eckstein Dies: Leader in Ethical Culture JUNE 22, 1973
Dr. Walter Eckstein, a leader in the American Ethical Union, a federation of Ethical Culture societies, died Tuesday at Midtown Hospital. His age was 81, and he lived at 3900 Grey stone Avenue, the Bronx.
Dr. Eckstein had been president of the Vienna Ethical Society and as its leader in the years after World War I he helped found an anlisuicide bureau. When the Nazis occu pied Vienna in World War II Dr. Eckstein was arrested but later released through the inter vention of Dr. John Lovejoy Elliott, then senior leader of the Society for Ethical Culture here.
Dr. Eckstein translated Adam Smith's “Theory of Moral Sentiments” into German. He was regarded as an authority on Spinoza's writings.
His widow, the former Lilly Kertesz survives.
