Notes a. Note: NI1340 Note: This research began as an effort to determine the ancestry of Sally (Graham) Easley, Peggy (Graham) Glasgow, and Charlotte (Graham) Hickman Hagans of Missouri. It is possible that this Edward Graham was a brother of the Patience Graham who married Gershom Allen. So far, no documentation confirming this hypothesis has been located. Edward Graham, b. between 1727/1758 [probably ca. 1745/55]--d.c. 1827-1828?, Allen Co., KY? Although the surviving census data indicates that Edward Graham could have been born as early as 1727, I am currently hypothesizing that he fit into the younger/middle possibilities of the possible age range, and was a married man in his late twenties or early thirties when he first appeared in Wilkes Co., NC, records in 1779. This would be compatible with the ages of his known children. However, if the 1787 census of NC implies that he already had four sons and six daughters, then he would have to have been somewhat older. However, without confirming data, there is never any guarantee that all the people in a household were children of the household head. This file also contains, under other entries, much additional background material on neighbors, connections, associates, kissing kin, and possible shirttail relatives. m. (1) c. 1770/72, probably in NC . [POSS m. (2) 13 September 1812, Warren Co., KY Sally O'Neal] [PROB m. (3) 13 September 1815, Allen Co., KY, Martha Steel, widow of Isaac Steel] Census records indicate: Son, b. 1766-1774 [NOTE: Probably Robert Graham] Son b. 1766-1774 [NOTE: Outside possibility from Pendleton Dist., SC of Levi Graham, b. 1755/1774; or Nimrod Graham, b. 1755-1774; however, no known subsequent contact of either with the remainder of Edward Graham's known descendants.] Son, b. 1775-1784 [NOTE: Probably Green Graham, b.c. 1774-1775. There was a Graham family from SC in Maury Co., TN, that used "Green" as a given name, and other Graham families as well.] Son, b. 1774-1786 [NOTE: Possibly George Graham?] [If the 7 females on the 1787 tax list were a wife and six daughters.] Daughter b. before 1787 [Nancy (Graham) Allen?] Daughter b. before 1787 [Sarah (Graham) Easley, b. 1780] Daughter b. before 1787 [probably Levicia, not Patricia, but one census record calls her Patience - (Graham] Pickens] Daughter b. before 1787 [Celia (Graham) Logan Stratton Morris] Daughter b. before 1787 Daughter b. before 1787 North Carolina Records: Surry Co., NC, formed 1771 from Rowan Co. Absher, Mrs. W.O., Surry County, North Carolina Court Minutes Volumes I & II 1768-1789 (Easley, SC: Southern Historical Press, 1985). p.1 "THE COURT MINUTES recorded on microfilm do not begin until 1779. There is no record of the Minutes prior to this date to be found in the State Archives. It is assumed those for this period [i.e. 1771-1778] are lost." The material that the compiler included (the first 6 pages of the book) from 1768-1778 were from some loose papers in the NC State Archives. CHECK: William Perry Johnson, Surry and Wilkes Counties, North Carolina Taxables, 1771-1777 (Volume One) (1974). http://www.newrivernotes.com/nc/wilkes.htm "Wilkes was formed in 1777 from Surry and the District of Washington. The act was to become effective February 15, 1778. It was named in honor of John Wilkes who was a violent opponent of the Tory party in England. He was not allowed to take his seat in Parliament to which he had been elected. The Americans imagined that he was suffering in the cause of liberty and named this county in his honor. It is in the northwestern section of the State and is bounded by Yadkin, Iredell, Alexander, Caldwell, Watauga, Ashe, Alleghany and Surry counties." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surry_County,_North_Carolina "The county was formed in 1771 from Rowan County. It was named for the county of Surrey in England, birthplace of William Tryon, Governor of North Carolina from 1765 to 1771. In 1777 parts of Surry County and Washington District (now Washington County, Tennessee) were combined to form Wilkes County. " http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rowan_County,_North_Carolina "The county was formed in 1753 from the northern part of Anson County. It was named for Matthew Rowan, acting governor of North Carolina from 1753 to 1754. Originally, Rowan County was a vast territory with an indefinite western boundary. Reductions in its extent began in 1770, when the eastern part of it was combined with the western part of Orange County to become Guilford County, North Carolina. In 1771 the northeastern part of what remained of Rowan County became Surry County. In 1777 the western part of Rowan County became Burke County. In 1788 the western part of the now much smaller Rowan County became Iredell County." Absher, Mrs. W.O. [Ruby], comp. Land Entry Book Wilkes County, North Carolina 1778-1781. A large number of the family--which was allied with the Parmenas Haynes family that moved from Henry County to Oglethorpe County, Va.--remained in Franklin County. An Aquilla was living in Surry County, N.C. (c1), in 1771, and a man of that name was in Jackson County Ga., in 1805. Their relationship to the Greers of Pendleton has not been traced. In pendleton in 1790, James, Aquilla and Solomon Greer were neighbors of the Clevelands from Wilkes County, N.C., and Jonn Greer lived not far away. Wikipedia has the following: http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~scpicke2/ Doing research in the GoldenCorner (Anderson-Oconee-Pickens) counties of South Carolina might be time consuming for you, because of how these counties were formed. Based on your time-period, you might need to research all (3) counties. As a result, you'll find that many of the webpage links on the left side of this page will represent all (3) counties. - Prior to ~1783, no lawful White settlements were above present southern Anderson County border. - In 1789 Pendleton County was formed as part of the 96 Judicial District from Indian Country. - In 1795 Pendleton County was placed in the Washington Judicial District. - In 1799, Pendleton County was named Pendleton District by the State legislature and Washington Judicial District was discontinued. - In 1826/27, Pendleton District was divided into the Anderson & Pickens Districts. - In 1868 the state legislature decided to change all districts to counties. - Oconee County (est. 1868) represents part of old Pickens County & added Indian Land. - Pickens County (est. 1825) represents part of old Pickens District. - Anderson County (est. 1826) represents the old Anderson District. - In 1986, Pickens County annexed Oconee County land that included Clemson University and land extending SE to Anderson County. http://sciway3.net/scgenweb/oconee-county/land.html When Pendleton District broke up into Anderson and Pickens counties in 1826 Anderson County "inherited" and kept using the Mesne Conveyance books formerly used by the Pendleton District.
