In 1871, Martin B. Scott published an article in NYGBR giving a lineage for the Richard Scott who lived in Providence, Rhode Island, which included the Scotts of Scott Hall in county Kent, England. [3] In 1942, Richard LeBaron Bowen published in NEHGR giving credence to this theory and adding a coat of arms to the Providence family, based on a 1608 armorial pedigree roll.[4] Unfortunately, this armorial roll was fraudulent. Moriarty's corrections to Austin's Genealogical Dictionary repeats the spurious theory of the Scott family.[5]

Sir Anthony Wagner of Oxford published English Genealogy in which he showed that this lineage was incorrect and that Richard Scott of Providence was descended from the Scott family of Glemsford, Suffolk, England.[6] Henry Waters published a will of George Scott which clarified some of the family.[7] From these and from wills of the Scott family, Harold Porter constructed the more authoritative version we now have of the Scott family of Glemsford, Suffolk, England.[2] The biography below is largely based on Porter's construction, along with notes from Threlfall's Fifty GM Ancestors.[8]
