Elias M Summers served in Company C, 6th Regiment West Virginia Infantry before it was constituted by order of the War Department to become Company F, West Virginia Light Artillery. This company was under the direction of Captain Thomas A Maulsby and became known as Maulsbys Battery. Records shows that Elias M Summers was killed during the skirmish at Martinsburg on 14 June 1863, just 6 days before West Virginia became a state.
