Notes

(From Carmel, 1855-1955 (p. 33), published in commemoration of the centennial of Carmel Public School, School Section No. 9, Thurlow Township)

“The first Reed to come to Canada was William Reed, a descendant of John, who with his family came as United Empire Loyalists in 1780. They travelled by torch light at night and concealed themselves in the forest in the daytime as protection against the American Revolutionists. They reached the St. Lawrence River in early Autumn and travelled westerly to the Moira River and then proceeded northerly from Meyers Creek, as Belleville was then known, about five miles to the grant of land that they had received, which is now called Corbyville. It is believed they were the second family to locate in the area.”
