Elizabeth Gerard was born circa 1680.[2] She was the daughter of Digby Gerard, 5th Baron Gerard of Gerard's Bromley and Lady Elizabeth Gerard.[1]

She married Lt.-Gen. James Hamilton, 4th Duke of Hamilton, son of William Douglas-Hamilton, 1st Earl of Selkirk and Anne Hamilton, 3rd Duchess of Hamilton, on 17 July 1698 at Bushey Park, London, England.[1]

She died on 13 February 1743/44 at St. James's Square, St. James's, London, England.[2] She was buried on 21 February 1743/44 at Westminster, London, England.[2]

As a result of her marriage, Elizabeth Gerard was styled as Duchess of Hamilton on 17 July 1698.

Swift says of her in 1711 "she talks too much, is a plaguey detractor, and I believe I shall not much like her," and in the following year "she has abundance of wit and spirit ... handsome and airy, and seldom spared anybaody that gave her the least provocation, by which she had many enemies and few friends."[2]
