Elizabeth Olweiler (Oldweiler) was born on January 20, 1775, in Elizabeth, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to Jacob and Anna Leidich Olweiler. She married John Schwartz on June 17, 1792. Through this union theyproduced 11 children.
The family would leave their Pennsylvania roots in 1801, travelling west to Indiana, and settling in the Utica Township of Clark County. It was in Indiana that the German "Schwartz" name would also become somewhat anglicized, shortening to "Swartz", the name that would appear in future generations.
The connection with the Methodist Church was strong in the family. Besides being among the founders of the first Methodist church in Indiana(what would become the New Chapel United Methodist Church), two of the Schwartz children, George and Jacob, would also become ordained ministers.
Elizabeth died on April 9, 1846, in Utica, Clark County, Indiana, at the age of 71, and was buried in The New Chapel United Methodist Churchcemetery.
