About Francis Tuckett
Francis Tuckett of Frenchay Common, near Bristol, England (1802–1868), was a world traveler as well as a leather merchant, horticulturalist, social reformer, philanthropist and Quaker.
In 1832, in anticipation of his marriage the following year to Mariana Fox of Falmouth, he bought the Old House, Frenchay, and added the conservatory.
Like his children, he was a person with insatiable appetite for life and formidable physical and intellectual energy. Apart from his world wide traveling, he was a diligent and successful leather merchant, a skilled horticulturalist, a keen horseman and cricketer, equally at home in the world of arts and sciences and ever active in many aspects of social reform, local philanthropy and the work of the Society of Friends.
