About Francisca Louisa Zecha

Francisca Louisa Zecha (1848–1939), usually known as Louisa Zecha, was a prominent, colonial Indonesian community leader and the Indo-Bohemian matriarch of the Lauw-Sim-Zecha family, part of the 'Cabang Atas' gentry of the Dutch East Indies (today Indonesia).[1][2][3][4] She attracted significant attention due to her controversial interracial marriages to two Peranakan Chinese magnates, Lauw Tek Lok, Luitenant der Chinezen of Bekasi and Sim Keng Koen, Kapitein der Chinezen of Sukabumi.[1][2] The posts of Kapitein and Luitenant der Chinezen were high-ranking civil administration positions in the Dutch colonial bureaucracy.[2][5] Zecha's community leadership, philanthropy, personal bravery and longevity earned her widespread respect and admiration in colonial society by the time she died in 1939.

Louisa (Francisca) Zecha, my great-great-great-grandmother, was a mixed-race Eurasian (Indonesian and Dutch) woman, allegedly with "Bohemian roots" who lived in Indonesia from 1848 to 1939. She is an enigma. I have not as yet managed to trace back further than her marriages to Lauw Tek Lok, and after his death, to Sim Keng Koen. She had eight children in total! My grandfather, Gouw Giok Kim, is a descendant of her first marriage to Lauw Tek Lok. Apparently, "Lauw caused some consternation among the colonial authorities due to his unconventional and interracial marriage with an Indo woman of Bohemian descent, Louisa Zecha" (wikipedia).

Interesting! Lauw Tek Lok was a wealthy landlord who became appointed "Lieutenant of the Chinese of Bekasi" in 1854. His family were involved in the Opium trade (wikipedia). My grandfather is Lauw Tek Lok and Louisa Zecha's great-great-grandson.

The descendents of Lauw Tek Lok and Louisa Zecha are spread all over the world - Indonesia, China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Holland, Canada, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Denmark....

But how did Louisa Zecha's family come to Indonesia, and what is the Bohmenian connection???
