About Franz Johnston
Frank (Franz) Johnston (1888-1949) was a Canadian painter and a founding member of the Group of Seven. Johnson exhibited with the Group of Seven only once, in their first show at the Art Gallery of Toronto, now the Art Gallery of Ontario in 1920. His rate of production was more than any other of the Group of Seven artists. He officially broke from the Group in 1924, claiming that he wanted to have his own exhibitions.
Johnston's style became more realistic throughout his life. He had a particular fascination for the qualities of light reflected from snow.
In 1927 he changed his name to Franz Johnston.
