DNA evidence has brought much clarification to the Ayers families who were living in VA, NC and GA with many of the same names and presented at the time a "cousin" looking form of relationship but which were not/now proved by YDNA testing related. Separating them out into several Y Groups/families with Garland belonging to Y DNA haplogroup I-M 253, with two male descendant lines (KZJ8-9XQ and LJB3-V2J) having haplogroup I-Z59.
Garland aka Gallant (no proof is forthcoming as to which is the correct first name at this point) was born about 1772 Virginia son of Daniel Ayers. The family migrated to North Carolina, then to Franklin County, Georgia where he and some of his brothers lived. Three of the Ayers left the state of Georgia for Buncombe County (later Yancey), NC; probably related to a land issue and suit by the state of Georgia. Gallant was in Guilford County NC in 1796 to witness a will. Brothers Moses, Baker, and James W stayed in Franklin county Georgia.
Garland's first wife's name is uncertain; his second wife was Anna Bennett married about 1820.
He died between September 1830 (date of his will) - April 1831 (when the Buncombe County, NC. court approved his will) According to family tradition, he is buried in Old Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in what is now Yancey county.

From; "Old Zion Baptist Church Cemetery"
"Before there was a Yancey County there was the Old Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. According to family tradition, the Rev. James W. Ayers gave the land for the church, a school, and a cemetery. You wonder who was the first one to be buried in this cemetery. There is no documentation, but you wonder if the Rev. James gave the land for the cemetery so that he would have a place to bury his father, Gallant Ayers. Gallant, according to family tradition, is buried here, but we do not know if he was the first one.Gallant Ayers is the father of the Ayers Family of Yancey County."
He died between September 1830 (date of his will) - April 1831 (when the Buncombe County, NC. court approved his will)
