About George Waddell of Balquhatstone

GEORGE WADDELL OF BALQUHATSTONE (aka GEORGIO or GEORGE WEDDELL)

George Waddell (aka George Weddell) is noticed on 3 November 1536, in the witness list of a charter by which Alexander Livingston of Terentera confirms that he has sold one half of the lands of Wester Dalquharne, in Slamannan parish in Stirlingshire, Scotland, to Allan Tennant (aka Alano Tennand) and his wife Margaret Horne. For greater security Allan and his wife obtained a charter of confirmation under the Great Seal of Scotland on11 December 1540. Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, 1513-1546, charter number 2237 on p. 508 On the same day George Weddell witnessed a second charter, for land in Balquhatstone, which was made in favour of John Salmond and his wife Jonete Weddell, and a third charter for land there which was made in favour of Alexander Arthur and his wife Jonete Weddell.Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, 1546-1580, charter number 909

Georgw Waddell (aka George Weddell) is noticed again two days later, on 5 November 1536, in a charter by which Alexander Livingston of Terrentera confirms that he has sold to George and his wife Jonete Russall one third of the lands of Baquhatstane, extending to a forty shilling land (excepting a one third part of two acres of land on the south side of Peitrig), in Slamannan parish in Stirlingshire, Scotland. For greater security George and his wife obtained a charter of confirmation under the Great Seal of Scotland on 12 June 1540. Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, 1513-1546, charter number 2172 on p. 492

His date of Birth

There is no evidence for the birth or baptism of George Waddell of Baquhatstone, However, in the absence of any evidence to the contrary and in view of the fact that minor children could not enter into legal contracts, it seems reasonable to suppose that George Waddell had already passed the age of majority before he purchased his share of Balquhatstone on 5 November 1536. If as seems likely this was the case then it might be considered reasonable to suggest that he was probably born before 5 November 1515.

The Lands of Balquhatstone

George Waddell purchased one third of the lands of Balquhatstone from Alexander Livingstone of Terentera on 5 November 1536. The other two thirds was purchased by John Salmond and his wife Jonete Weddell, and by Alexander Arthur and his wife Jonete Weddell. All three men appear to have been the kindly tenants who occupied this land in the period immediately before it was set in feu to them. The fact that three different members of the Waddell family had a proprietorial interest in this land suggest that the family may have been well established there before 3 November 1536. Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, 1546-1580, charters numbered 909 and 910 on p. 203

Note

The following notice suggests that George Waddell may be the second member of his family to hold land at Balquhatstone but evidence is wanting and this cannot presently be confirmed: An important branch (of the Waddell family), probably the senior, settled in the lands of Balquhatstone in Slamannan, Stirlingshire between 1470 and 1536, the first charter to the Waddells of Balquhatstone was granted by King James V to George Weddell and his wife Jonet [sic] Russell in November 1536 and recorded in the Register of the Great Seal 'although it has been suggested that the lands had been granted previously to James the father of George by King James IV before 1513. Marriage

George Waddell of Balquhatstone married Janet Russell (aka Joneter Russall). The date of the marriage has not been identified but they were married before 5 November 1536. Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, 1513-1546, charter number 2172 on p. 492
