Known as Gerty Joubert, she grew up on the farm Bydenweg, on the Stellenbosch Kloof road. Received schooling through medium English and although Afrikaans speaking, conducted all correspondence in English for her whole life. Her religious education took place before the first printing of the Afrikaans bible and she continued to read the Dutch bible for the rest of her life. She was a gentle, well educated and refined lady. After the death of her husband, Pieter, she moved to a house in Helderberg street, Stellenbosch, where she lived with her daughter, Lucie, next door to her sisters, "Miss Lucie" , principal of Bloemhof Girls School, and "Miss Mary". |
