About Heavy Weather Barnett
Death of an Old Settler
We regret to record the death of Mr William Barnett, of Clifton Terrace, Wakapuaka, an old and much respected resident of that district. Mr Barnett had attained the advanced age of 92 years, and had been suffering for some time, so that the end did not come unexpectedly to his relatives. He came to Nelson in 1849 in the ship Thomas Harrison, and for two years lived here, carrying on his trade as a shoemaker. He then removed to Clifton Terrace, where he has ever since resided, farming and fruit growing. Mrs Barnett predeceased her husband by five years, and their descendants make a numerous family, extending to five generations, Mr Barnett having for some years been a great-great-grandfather. Two sons, Messrs Henry (Nelson) and William (Takaka) predeceased their patents, themselves leaving large families, and there are now living Messrs Arthur (Blenheim), Thomas (Nelson), and David (Wakapuaka), and Miss Barnett, who lived with and attended to her father. The funeral will leave Clifton Terrace for the New Cemetery this afternoon at two o'clock.
