... The Cooper boys went out in the street to play on Wednesday, 28 August 1957 and immediately many of the mothers rushed out to bring their own children back into the house.

"My boys don't understand what is happening, they are much too young," said Mrs. Cooper. "It Is making life very difficult for us."

Baby Ann was the first to catch polio. Ann had only been walking two weeks when she fell ill with tonsillitis. Dr. R. C. Lamberty, of Queen's Crescent, Kentish Town, was called and he gave the baby some medicine. Some time later, Ann became very sick.

"I realised something was wrong when I tried to put her nappy on," said Mrs. Cooper. "Her legs were stiff and straight and she kept screaming." Mrs. Cooper put Ann on the floor and tried to get her to walk. But Ann fell over.

"I cried when I realised what had happened," said Mrs. Cooper. "Ann kept screaming because she couldn't understand why she couldn't toddle any more."

Mrs. Cooper called her doctor again and she says he told her the child was weak from not eating properly for a few days.

"Four days later, I woke up and found Peter could not move one of his legs," said Mrs. Cooper. "I became worried and called Dr. Lamberty again."

This time, Mrs. Cooper asked Dr. Lamberty to get a second opinion and another doctor was called. Two days later, Peter and Ann were taken to hospital.

Dr Lamberty said on Wednesday: "I have nothing to say about the case. I am not allowed to divulge anything about a patient unless I have the patient's or, in this case, the mother's consent."

Earlier, Dr. Lamberty's wife, a doctor herself who shares her husband's practice, said: "It would be impossible to isolate all the contacts in a case like this. If we did, it would probably mean putting the whole of this part of St. Pancras under isolation because there are so many contacts."

Mrs. Cooper has been told that Clive must not go to school until September 16. "But I was told by the doctors and health visitors who came to fumigate the room that the boys can mix with other children so long as they are out in the open," said Mrs. Cooper.

She added: "I have kept Gary away from the nursery of my own accord but the doctors didn't tell me not to send him."

The secretary of the hospital management committee at Great Ormond Street said it was difficult to isolate contacts. "It is very difficult to isolate a whole family or a house," he said. "If you did, you would be going back to the old days of the plague when whole houses were isolated and a notice put on the door saying that no-one could go in or out. You can't do that sort of thing nowadays."

Since the beginning of the year, there have been 10 to 15 polio cases in St. Pancras. Said Dr. Geffen: "The mother of the twins is not in quarantine. I don't think, however, there is very much risk of her giving it to anyone else. "We usually tell the mothers to keep children away from nurseries and day schools for 21 days and to keep away from confined spaces. But, of course, you can only advise the parents on this. You can't Make them do it.

"We usually find that the child contacts run about in the streets or open parks and quite honestly, I do not think this is dangerous. Polio is not spread as easily as that." Adult contact are not isolated in any way.

The "N.L.P." understands that three positive and two doubtful cases of polio occurred at Woodchurch Road, Kilburn, another L.C.C. nursery in health division II.
