The surname Sands is of ancient SANDS English origin, and is spelled also Sandes and Sandys. Two pioneers of this family came to New England before 1650. James Sands, born at Reading, Berkshire, England, 1622, settled in Taunton, Massachusetts, as early as 1658, and died in Block Island, where he finally located, March 13, 1695; married in England, Sarah Walker; ...

comments

There is nothing to indicate a parent of Henry Sandys. His children were born in the early 1600s, not the 1618 (estimated?) date ascribed. Disconnected August 2015

Biography

It is thought that Henry Sandys was born c1610 in England. [1]

He may have come in December of 1638 aboard the John of London with the Ezekiel Rogers' Company. [2]

Shipping Merchant

Henry is mentioned as a "merchant," and apparently he was also involved in shipping. We have record of two transactions involving his part ownership in merchant ships in 1648/9. [3] [4]

Marriage

He married Sybil (unk) by about 1637/8. [1] As they were admitted to the Boston Church on December 30, 1638 and daughter Deliverance was baptized on January 6, 1638/9, Sybil may have been pregnant on the voyage to New England. [5]

His wife Sybil's birth is estimated to be born about 1617 [2] and a Sibella Sandes, midwife, in testimony given at Boston in September 1678, she is noted as aged 61. [1]

They were admitted to the First Church in Boston on 30 10th month 1638. He was made a Freeman of the Colony on October 7, 1640.[1]

Death and Legacy

Henry was deceased by July 11, 1651, when Joseph and Mariam Wormall, of Scituate were named debtors in his estate. [6] December 17, 1651 the first inventory of his estate was taken. [1][7] [8]

His estate was valued at L289, and on January 30, 1651/2 Jeremiah Houchin, he largest creditor, to whom he owned L489 was appointed administrator. [1] [9] [8]

On July 10, 1674, Ezekiel Cravath, husband of Mercy (nee Sandys/widow Mears) of Boston, gave a lease of the dwelling house of John Mears, deceased, now in the possession of Ezekiel Cravath, to widow Sibella Sands for eight years. [10] [1]

Widow Sibella Sandes, aged 61, was still living on September 6, 1678, when she testified at Boston regarding a stillborn child. [1]

Children

Disputes

He is sometimes said to have been born in 1618 at Brettenham, county Suffolk, England.[citation needed] He is said to have been the son of Henry Sandys and Elizabeth Goffe.[citation needed]

According to the Topographical Dictionary of 2885 English Emigrants ... by Banks, Henry Sandys' home parish in England was Culford.[19] Culford Parish is in St Edmundsbury, Suffok, England, which is 16 miles from Brettenham. Unfortunately, like a lot of early 20th Century writers, Banks does not reveal his evidence for Culford as Henry's origin.
According to Patricia Hatcher writing for the Great Migration Newsletter, the surname is common at the Kirk Ella and Howden, towns in East Riding of Yorkshire, England. [2] These villages are near Rowley, East Riding of Yorkshire, the inspiration for the Ezekiel Rogers' Company naming of Rowley, Massachusetts.
